We had the unexpected
pleasure surprise to have a day without the boss today, aka the three year old! Whilst she was off gallivanting with her pal (plus parents obviously) we decided to pack up a picnic and hop in the car to Lough Boora Parklands. We have been loads of times but this was our first time to cycle around some of the lesser known parts. Bicycle hire is available on site and is an absolute bargain at €3 a hour! A visitor centre has recently opened where you can get tea/coffee etc and there are loads of picnic benches dotted around the course where you can stop to relieve tired legs as well as indulging in a ham/tayto roll (standard picnic fare in our family, throw in a packet of jaffa cakes and it is a feast!).
There are two cycling trails to follow depending on how energetic you are feeling. We went for the longer one and stopped about forty million times along the route for water, to take off hoodies, put on hoodies, a jaffa cake, to take off another hoodie, put on a jacket and lastly to have our picnic. There is so much to see in the parklands including the most fabulous sculptures which have been made from old machinery that was once used on the bog, amazing!
The boys really enjoyed the cycle as did I and I may even bring the boss lady along with us before the summer is out for a jaunt, little carriages to pull along are available to hire as well with no extra cost. So lovely to have this facility twenty minutes from home, thoroughly enjoyable.
We couldn’t end the day without stopping in the picturesque village of Shannonbridge for an ice-cream and a visit to their lovely playground. Ah I love a nice ice cream. Any plans for trips with the children over the next few weeks? What do you put in your picnic bag?
